Following the surgery
After surgery you will be taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit where you
will be closely monitored by our professional staff. Approximately one
hour later, you will be taken to the Advanced Post-Anesthesia Unit, where
you will be given light refreshments. A friend or member of your family
can visit with you in this area.
When you are ready to be discharged, you will be evaluated by the
anesthesiologist. Your nurse will instruct you and your family about care
at home. Since it is not unusual to feel slightly sleepy or dizzy after
anesthesia and sedative medication, a responsible adult must accompany you
home:
For the first 24 hours after you arrive home, you should:
- Have a responsible adult with you.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activities.
- Do not drive any vehicles or operate any heavy equipment.
- Follow the instructions given to you by your surgeon and our staff.
- Do not take any medications that have not been prescribed by, or previously discussed with, your surgeon.
- Call your surgeon if you notice any unusual symptoms or changes in your condition.
- Anesthesia may impair judgment; do not sign any important papers or make important decisions.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
A nurse from the Surgery Center will call you the first working day after
your surgery to find out how you are progressing.
